Bill Davidson of Harley Davidson Milwaukee.
Meeting and talking with Bill Davidson reminded me of the humble beginnings, history and truly inspirational success, that Harley-Davidson has had here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin!
In 1903 a small shed in the Davidson family back yard, near 38th and Highland, served as their first shop and is not too far from the present day Harley Davidson headquarters in Milwaukee. From that first bike they began tinkering with, to creating their first motorized bicycle, to starting one of the world's most iconic motorcycle brands, Harley Davidson has a rich and inspirational history here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson worked tirelessly and released their first motorcycle, the Harley-Davidson Model 1. The Model 1 featured a single-cylinder engine and a top speed of 25 miles per hour! Despite the relatively low performance of their early motorcycles, Harley-Davidson quickly gained a reputation for quality and reliability. The company's motorcycles were soon being used by law enforcement agencies and the military, which helped to solidify Harley-Davidson's place in American culture.
Over the years, Harley-Davidson continued to innovate and refine its motorcycles. In 1909, the company introduced its first V-twin engine, which offered more power and smoother operation than the single-cylinder engines of the time. This engine design would become a hallmark of Harley-Davidson motorcycles for decades to come.
During World War I, Harley-Davidson provided motorcycles to the US military, which helped to further establish the brand's reputation for quality and toughness. After the war, Harley-Davidson's motorcycles became increasingly popular among civilians, and the company continued to grow and expand.
In the years that followed, Harley-Davidson would become synonymous with American culture, particularly the rebellious spirit of the 1950s and 1960s. The company's motorcycles were featured in countless movies, TV shows, and songs, and Harley-Davidson became a symbol of freedom, individuality, and the open road.
Today, Harley-Davidson remains an iconic brand with a strong presence in Milwaukee, where the company is still headquartered!
